Coach Joe Patrone

Joe Patrone

Joe Patrone officially joined the MVS coaching staff in the winter of 2005-2006, though he had assisted the staff prior to that.

Joe began coaching high school track in the early 1990s, starting at Somerville High School working with the jumpers and sprinters. At Somerville he worked with 3-time All-State Champion in the 100 meters, Princess Fenton.

He left Somerville to take over the head coaching position at Lawrence High School in 1995 where he coached until the spring of 2005, including cross country for three years. While at Lawrence, he coached six All-State Champions, including 2-time All-State Champion in the 100 meters Johan Rafael. While at Lawrence he was a 2-time Merrimack Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Eagle-Tribune Coach of the Year, and the 2004 Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Outdoor Boys Coach of the Year after leading my team to a second place finish at the All-State Meet.

In addition to his coaching duties, Joe has also conducted high jump clinics at West Point, and for the MSTCA Coaches Clinic and Learn by Doing Clinics.

Currently, Joe is the girls assistant coach at Peabody High School.

As an athlete, Joe was the 1980 Connecticut State Champion in the high jump with a best of 6' 10.25". He was also named a High School All-American. He attended the University of Rhode Island where he still hold the school record in the high jump of 7' 4.25". He was a three-time New England Collegiate Champion and the 1984 Penn Relay and IC4A Champion in the high jump.

In 1985 Joe jumped his personal best of 7' 6.5", which is still the All-Time New England record in the high jump and ranked me 7th in the US and 27th in the world that year. He competed at the 1985 and 1987 Olympic Festivals and was a participant at the 1984 Olympic Trials in Los Angeles.

Joe says that he "very glad to be a member of MVS. Since college I have competed for the NYAC, Waltham Track Club, and BAA. In the late 80s I was down in the Boston area and I saw what went on with the clubs and coaches down there. MVS is the best club that I have ever seen and the members are the greatest."
